What-are-Technical-Translation-Services.jpg

SilkRoad’s strength lies in its experience in technical translation services

Providing technical translation services means offering translations of texts related to technological subject areas or those dealing with the practical application of scientific and technological information, such as equipment manuals, descriptions of technical processes, component lists, software messages, and other hardware and software texts. The translation and localization industry has produced quite a few standards aimed at assuring the quality of technical translation services, such as the German DIN 2345 standard or the European EN 15038 standard, which translation service providers must apply in the following areas:

  • personnel and technical resources
  • quality and project management
  • framework conditions for contracts
  • work processes
  • additional services.

How Do You Know Whether Your Project Falls Under the ‘Technical Translation Services’ Category? While the presence of specialized terminology can lead you to believe that your document is a technical one and requires technical translation services, it is not true that all documents containing specialized terminology will be classified as technical documents, since technical terms can be found in many subject areas, even in non-technical documents.

Technical translation services cover a broad range specialized texts and require a high level of subject knowledge; therefore, technical translators are often much more highly qualified and experienced than other translators. To ensure high-quality translations, make sure you contact a good translation agency.

Obstacles Encountered When Translating from Russian

In the translation process, there are always difficulties in equivalence that must be addressed, especially when we are talking about translating from Russian. In fact, translating from Russian is unique in that it presents obstacles that can interfere with the ability to find the exact English-language wording.   The first major difference that causes translation problems when translating from Russian is the absence of articles in Russian. There are no words for “a”, “an” or “the”. So, when we see the Russian original text “man is driving car”, it’s hard to tell if it is “a man”, “the man”, “a car” or “the car”. Another problem is that some Russian words can simply not be translated into English, as they may describe concepts or feelings that for which we don’t have words in English; for example, the word “toska” has no single word in English that renders all the shades of meaning of the one word “toska”. At its deepest and most painful, it denotes a sensation of great spiritual anguish, often without any specific cause. The second problem in translating from Russian is Russian orthography. For example, although punctuation is crucial to even basic written literacy in any European language, the Russian language is different in that it has speech marks. Sometimes the English speech marks “…” become «…» in a Russian printed text.

To overcome these obstacles, Russian translators should follow some basic rules so as to produce professional translations.

1-Translate the meaning, not the words.

2-Rely on your wits and savvy – this can prove to be helpful when translating a difficult text.

3-Ask a native speaker to proofread your translation so that it sounds natural.

4-Never accept a project which you know is not within your abilities.

5-Develop your skills to the best of your ability.

Human Website Translator or Machine Translator?

The website translator’s job

A website translator’s main job involves adapting a website for different languages and target markets to make it accessible to, and suitable for, the target audience. Website translators ensure that your website is translated in a linguistically and culturally appropriate way, so that you are able to communicate to a whole new international audience in the different audiences’ own languages. Website translators realize that website localization involves more than just translating content. Their work involves many aspects of the website localization project in order to maximize efficiency. They take into consideration the appearance of the web pages by analyzing the colors or images and offering a cultural applicable product.   That’s why it is preferable to use a human website translator, rather than a machine translator; they can provide you with a better final translation that accurately reflects your company’s vision and mission. In addition, they understand the target audience’s culture, terminology and idioms, enabling them to deliver your message perfectly.

Will Translation Companies ever be Replaced by Machine Translation?

The fact that machine translation is carried out by machines does not mean that humans are totally absent from the process of translation

It has been claimed that translation companies will be replaced by machine translation. Translation has gained in importance throughout history, but late in the twentieth century, researchers worked on creating translation machines to help translators do their job more easily. Thus, a new type of translation has emerged to compete with translation companies. Translation companies will never disappear, as you can never replace human translators with machine translation. Machine translations will always be useful as money and time savers, and are good at giving the reader a general idea of what the source text says, but their weaknesses are great, in comparison with human translation. Machine translation is often literal, or word-for-word. Also, machines are not able to recognize or translate idioms, slang, or terms that do not appear in the machine’s memory. When translation companies handle your translation job, you can be assured of a better translation quality, as human translators can understand the different cultural, linguistic and semantic factors in the text. Indeed, human translators can manipulate language to serve the meaning of the source text. And machine translation cannot compete with the translator’s ability to make sense of a phrase by using their best judgment.

Nobody will notice when you get the right translation. However, everybody will laugh and make fun of you if you get it wrong. It will be worse for you – and hilarious for everyone else – if the wrong translation makes sense in a manner that contradicts your intended message. Here are two real life examples of popular failed translations:

  1. US President Jimmy Carter in 1977 accidentally “abandoned” the US when his opening statement “I left the United States this morning” was translated to “When I abandoned the United States”
  2. In 1956, Nikita Khrushchev, a Soviet Premier, while trying to say that they would outlast the United States, ended up saying “We will bury you”, a statement that was misinterpreted to mean that Russia was threatening to destroy the US.

The repercussions of failed translations can be hilarious, deadly and costly. Make sure that you don’t experience this when translating to or from the Russian language by carefully choosing the translation agency you utilize.

Conducting Russian translation is not simply about conversion of words from root to target language. Tones and ideas also have to be accounted for to ensure that the message is passed without any distortions. Localization on its part takes into account cultural elements, dialect along with other facets related to the Russian language in this case. Taking the measures below will ensure that you find the best agency for translating and localizing Russian content. This way, you will avoid translation mistakes within your text.

Look for a Russian translation service that utilizes well-trained staff and has acquired membership and certifications from relevant regulatory bodies. It should also employ comprehensive processes to ensure obtaining the intended high-quality output. These include conducting the actual translation, secondary editing, proof-reading and sign-off as well as quality assurance of language. In addition, the translation company needs to avail to its clients, around-the-clock customer-support for 7 days a week and provide customized services.

Reputation
Carry out checks on the reputation of your prospective Russian translation and localization firm too by requesting for its portfolio. Make efforts to contact its past clients along with anyone else close to you with useful advice in this context. You can also visit online forums together with independent review-sites for insight into activities performed by various language translation firms.

Affordability

Beware of utilizing agencies that appear too cheap as you may afterwards have to contend with poor service-delivery. Remember that in most cases you will get what you pay for exactly. Working with a proficient translation and localization firm comes with the assured benefit of cost-efficiency for any business with international interests.
